ISO tells us the 7 Quality Management Principles are a set of fundamental beliefs, norms, rules, and values that are accepted as true and can be used as a basis for quality management. These quality best practices will lead to higher customer satisfaction in any organization.

1 Customer Focus

Organizations depend on their customers and therefore should understand current and future customer needs, should meet customer requirements and strive to exceed customer expectations.

2 Leadership

Leaders (top management) establish unity of purpose and direction of the organization. They should create and maintain the internal environment in which people can become fully involved in achieving the organization’s objectives.

3 Engagement of People

People at all levels are the essence of an organization and their full involvement enables their abilities to be used for the organization’s benefit and allow the organization to achieve common goals including quality objectives.

4 Process approach

A desired result is achieved more efficiently when activities and related resources are managed as a process. The process approach incorporates the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle and risk-based thinking.

5 Improvement

Continual improvement of the organization’s overall performance should be a permanent objective of the organization. Undertaking internal audits at regular intervals can assist with identifying opportunities for improvement.

6 Evidence-based Decision Making

Effective decisions are based on the analysis of data and information. It is important to make decisions based on the facts, plan changes and verify the effectiveness of change.

7 Relationship Management

An organization and its interested parties (including suppliers) are interdependent and a mutually beneficial relationship enhances the ability of both to create value. Communication is key to maintaining and improving the quality management system (QMS).

The Law of the Lid

Last time I stated that the biggest mistake most companies make is to promote someone to a leadership position based on their technical skills. This makes some sense, on the surface. But the thing is, Leadership requires a completely different skill set and what happens more times than not is that you lose a good technical person and gain a bad manager!

Good leadership always makes a difference; unfortunately, so does bad leadership. It can be the difference between average (or worse) and exceptional organizational performance. Leadership is not easy to learn; if it was, everyone would be a leader. This Leadership 101 series will provide practical leadership tools and principles that can be applied immediately with your team.

Nothing worth doing ever comes without obstacles, and no learning takes place by running from adversity.  With failure comes wisdom and very few successes were home runs right out of the gate, but instead were the result of learning from many strikeouts. Failure is infinitely instructive, and you will find that more is learned from your failures than from your successes. Fear of failure is a uniquely human trait that takes conscience effort to acknowledge and overcome.

Don’t let fear of failure derail  your quality improvement efforts; when in doubt, remember these three Notorious Nuggets: https://tracqms.com/product/notorious-book/Notorious Book - Business Strategy from Ruthless Leaders

  1. Failure and adversity drives creativity and success
  2. The quickest way to becoming successful is to keep failing
  3. Preventable failures are bad, intelligent failures are good

While QMS documentation is often viewed as a necessary evil, it is a very important aspect of any quality system, but needs to be functional. The documentation system needs to be lean, mean and user friendly to the workforce. Read Part 2 here http://iconnect007.uberflip.com/i/1319500-pcb007-dec2020/69?m4=

W. Edwards Deming

Check out the first of seven articles in my The Right Approach column titled The Founding Fathers of Quality – Deming. This is the first in a series of seven installments, each highlighting one of the seven Founding Fathers of Quality (as selected by the author). It is important to understand and acknowledge their revolutionary contributions that still form the foundation of modern quality practices. Introduction

Many companies get caught in data traps. They focus so heavily on cost and survival that they end up using data as merely a marketing and sales tool. In doing so, they fail to realize the true power of data: It can transform every aspect of a business.

Survey Says…

A recent survey by iConnect007 revealed just how important data is to our industry, and also just how difficult it is to get accurate, actionable data to drive our businesses. The key takeaway from printed circuit executives was that their greatest need is accurate, real-time process data. When you apply process metrics and dashboards to your data tools, data can not only drive improvement, it can drive innovation. Companies struggle with data; how to get it, is it the right data, is it accurate, is it automated or a manual process? This is where using statistical analytics can help any business to improve their business, and not just in manufacturing but also in areas like your customer and employee hiring processes.

Data should never be pigeonholed or feared. Instead, it should be used to better understand your company. By breaking down the silos that exist within your organization you will generate new perspectives, ideas and performance levels as departments begin to measure their performance against the new metrics. Did you just realize that your company has fallen into a data trap? Luckily, it’s easy to break free from its chains, and using statistical data will reveal just how efficient and innovative your business can be.
